Tailoring aged care resources for diverse communities

In a residential aged care room decorated with Anzac memorabilia, an older man sits on a recliner with a blanket on his lap and a tray table in front of him. He is speaking to a woman sitting on a bed. There is a camera and microphone set up pointing towards him.
TSD communications consultant Jamie interviews WWII veteran Harold about his specialised aged care services

In the lead up to the introduction of the new Aged Care Act, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing wanted to make sure there was tailored information available for the range of diverse audiences who access or may need to know about aged care.

We were engaged to create a suite of tailored audiovisual resources for 14 specific diverse audiences, such as veterans and war widows, neurodivergent people, and the LGBTI+ community.

Working in consultation with the Department’s Diversity Consultative Committee, we produced:

  • Video and written case studies – using a storytelling approach to help people learn more about what hey can access through aged care. Here’s an example – Mary’s Story. https://youtu.be/c0eDegjVi0I?si=kHbbtlv6UOPaPWHg
  • Fact sheets tailored to diverse audiences, with information like understanding aged care, what to ask when choosing an aged care provider
  • Social media tiles and written content for various mediums to share information about My Aged Care and the dedicated help available to diverse audiences

From the beginning of the project, we made sure the resources and stories were provided in accessible forms and with additional accessibility features, including captions and Auslan translations.

We brought resources together into specific stakeholder kits so partners and third party intermediaries in aged care can help make sure resources reach the audiences they’re intended for.

It is a lovely video, in all the years I’ve worked with the Deaf Community I’ve seen only a few marketing materials that genuinely reflect the pride and power Auslan users have in their Community and language. I believe it will resonate with the Community and the cohort of people we work with.
