Encouraging more volunteer visitors in aged care

A community market stall is set up outdoors under a large tree with green leaves. A pop-up marquee shelters a staff member in a black jacket standing behind a table covered with a green tablecloth. They are speaking with a visitor who is wearing a dark jacket and carrying a tote bag. The stall displays brochures and signs promoting a volunteer program. A tall banner next to the table shows photos of older adults and reads, “This year, I volunteer.” A second vertical flag with a blue and green logo stands to the right of the stall.

In 2024, The Social Deck worked with the Department of Health and Aged Care to coordinate and attend community pop-up events to encourage more volunteers in aged care, through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS).

The ACVVS is a national program that supports volunteer visits to provide friendship and companionship to older people in aged care.

There are over 140 auspices who recruit and support volunteers in their local communities, and there are currently around 4,000 volunteer vacancies in the program.

We partnered with some of these auspices in areas where volunteer numbers were lower to hold pop-ups in places like libraries and markets to raise awareness of the program. This also helped us to understand and share what might prevent people from signing up as a volunteer visitor.

We engaged with over 1,400 community members at 15 pop up events across Australia.
